This book was created as part of the interactive, multi-disciplinary art show, Island Time. The exhibition emphasized story. Three artists presented the theme of time from an islander’s perspective with mono-prints (Janny Thompson), ceramics (Ester Strijbos), and short fiction/poetry (Monica Nawrocki). This artistic exploration speaks to the passage of time and what it means to be an islander. The show also highlighted the connections that grow among artists in small communities as the three presenters have drawn direct inspiration from one another’s work to create Island Time.
A curtain of snow falls outside my window--
each silent flake a word –
hoping to be caught--
for such weather,
are already out there,
catching single words
on their tongues and
Short story writers hurl tightly packed snowballs with startling accuracy.
Novelists grumble at these antics as they bundle up and grab their shovels.
Someone has to clear a path through all these words.
"Time in the Hold" performed by Marguerite Thompson and Amy Bockner on the opening night of the Island Time Show at The Old Schoolhouse Gallery on Cortes Island.
The song was written by Monica Nawrocki for the show and behind the performers you can see a series of prints by Janny Thompson called "The ferry Series" which were inspired by the song. Ester Strijbos created several ceramic pieces featuring lines from the song.
